A couple years ago I wrote about Loving Vincent and I am back to update you on that project! It happened and it is now a movie! This is groundbreaking and it is so inspiring that it was able to come to fruition. This is the first ever fully painted animated film. It was created from 62,450 frames, each of which was an oil painting. It took a team of 115 artists to create all the paintings for the film. Let me say that again – every single frame is painted by hand…
Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853. Over the course of his career, he painted more than 800 canvases — famous themes including sunflowers and wheat fields. At 37 years old, after being released from a mental institution, he took his own life without any explanation.
The pivotal question on why he took his own life is explored in the film through fictional interviews with the real-life characters and locations depicted in 94 of van Gogh’s famous paintings.
The entire 90-minute film took four years to make. And while there is computer software that can create the illusion of a painting with the click of a mouse, the filmmakers said computers can never replicate this kind of authenticity.
Check out this video that talks about how the film was made:
“The starry sky at last, actually painted at night, under a gas-lamp. The sky is green-blue, the water is royal blue, the fields are mauve. The town is blue and violet. The gaslight is yellow, and its reflections are red gold and go right down to green bronze. Against the green-blue field of the sky the Great Bear has a green and pink sparkle whose discrete paleness contrasts with the harsh gold of the gaslight. Two small coloured figures of lovers in the foreground.” -Van Gogh describing Starry night over the Rhône in a letter to his brother Theo
There isn’t an official release date for the film but they are updating their Facebook page with screening news. I am so excited to see it!
Will you go check it out?
